Recovering From Open Heart Surgery

Post-surgical care is utmost important in Open heart surgery. Hence it becomes extremely crucial for patients and their family members to educate themselves regarding the recovery process. They must be aware of what to expect in the coming days or months ahead for that matter. Not all patients would have same recovery experience but here we have mentioned some general information that you must know while you are recovering from open heart surgery:

CHANGE IN EATING HABITS.

You may have noticed the sudden change in your appetite. Sometimes you don’t feel hungry or too tired to eat anything. This is quite normal for patients. Relax! Your appetite will be back to normal soon. We would like to advise you to have your meals in small portions. You need to consume proper nutrition to heal your body and get stronger. We would recommend you to follow a diet which is high in protein, low in cholesterol and low in fat. Fish, eggs, dairy, beans and nuts are the great source of proteins. Reduce the consumption of salt and take only 2000 milligram a day. You must avoid processed foods at all costs as they are high in sodium.

SLEEP ISSUE

Many patients complain that they feel a lot of trouble sleeping after heart surgery. You Might also experience insomnia (inability to sleep) because of several reasons:

  • Impact of Anaesthesia.
  • Distress related to healing.
  • Change in your daily routine.
  • Tension from personal problems.

You don’t need to worry. Normal sleep patterns can be back in 3 to 4 weeks. Avoid long naps (not more than 20 minutes) in the afternoon. However, take some rest in between your daily activities. Take painkillers 30 minutes before sleep if you feel some kind of ache. Avoid taking caffeine in day time or evening. This can majorly hamper your sleeping patterns. It is always important to make a strict bedtime routine in order to let your body know it is rest time.

MOOD SWINGS

It is essential to take care of your mind and body while recovering from surgery. Indeed, it involves emotional and physical healing. The recovery process may be taxing on your mental health but you need to be patient throughout it. If you are in stress or emotional pain after the surgery; it is quite normal for a patient to feel in such a way. Many patients feel this in the first three months of the surgery. You may have frequent mood swings which include depression, anger, fear, anxiety, loneliness and helplessness. Though you may feel emotional and physically drained, it is important to motivate yourself everyday. Try some new hobbies and activities to distract yourself. Take a short walk in between. It is crucial to have a support system besides you. Have a discourse with your family and friends and be open about your frustrations, fear, concerns and emotional needs.

DRIVING AFTER SURGERY DEPENDS UPON INDIVIDUAL

Patients can resume driving after five weeks of surgery but you are required to first consult with your doctor. Your doctor may differ from your opinion and would advise you to resume or wait for a few more weeks.
